Waverley College EnrolmentAdmission PolicyA Catholic College"The Church's involvement in the field of Education is demonstrated especially by the Catholic School. No less than other schools does the Catholic School pursue cultural goals and the natural development of youth. It aims to create for the school community an atmosphere enlivened by the gospel spirit of freedom and charity." (Vatican 11, Decree on Christian Education n.8) The Catholic Church believes that "the task of imparting education belongs primarily to the family" and that parents "have a primary and inalienable duty and right in regard to the education of their children" (ibid., nn 3 and 6). Furthermore, parents have the duty "to send their children to Catholic Schools whenever this is possible". (ibid., n.8) Waverley College was established in 1903 by the Religious Congregation of Christian Brothers to meet the needs of Catholic families for the education of their sons. A School in the Edmund Rice TraditionThe Christian Brothers were founded by Edmund Ignatius Rice in Waterford, Ireland in 1802.
The Trustees of the Christian Brothers administer the College. An Independent CollegeThe Headmaster is appointed by Edmund Rice Education Australia. The College Board, which is constituted from members of the College Community, acts as an advisory body to the Headmaster. Being independent, enrolments to the College are not limited by zoning boundaries. The Headmaster is a member of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia. The Director of the Junior School is a member of the Junior School Heads Association of Australia. The College is one of the six Combined Associated Schools of NSW (CAS). The College believes that it must be involved in the total development of all its students: spiritual, intellectual, aesthetic, physical, social and emotional. It is the policy of the College that its students can be involved with the school far beyond the boundaries of the classroom and the school day. It therefore provides for and requires students to be involved in organised sport, performing arts, music and other cocurricular activities. |
