Year 9 Personal Development Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)
The PD/H/PE program at Waverley College aims to:
- develop a knowledge and understanding of the elements and factors which contribute to a healthy lifestyle
- develop a positive attitude toward physical activity
- encourage an exercise habit
- improve the students self esteem
- develop an understanding of relationships
- encourage community involvement and participation, and concern for the social wellbeing of others.
The PDHPE program at Waverley College introduces students to the significant social and health problems that exist in Australia. Many of these problems can be associated with the lifestyles adopted by individuals. The course attempts to empower students to make informed decisions and act upon them. The College recognises that its role is to be complementary to the efforts made by families and community groups.
PDHPE is an important element of the overall school curriculum because we are attempting to educate the whole person and to give students the knowledge and skills to improve their quality of life. The College has identified focus areas of concern for the school population. Individual needs of our students have been identified and as such topics such as drug use, beach safety and lifesaving, mental health issues linked to depression and suicide, and first aid and sports injuries are extensively covered in the program.
Course Content
The Stage 5 PD/H/PE Syllabus is divided into four strands.
- Self and Relationships
- Movement Skill & Performance
- Individual & Community Health
- Lifelong Physical Activity
The following Units are covered during the Year 9 pattern of study:

Year 9 are timetabled four lessons per cycle (two theory, four practical)
ASSESSMENT INFORMATION
Students attendance and attire (organisation) is recorded to make sure that students fulfil the mandatory hours. Student assessment will be based on the successful achievement of the course objectives and outcomes.
Student's assessment is based on performance in a variety of common tasks across the entire cohort including:
- Practical performance
- Movement composition & presentation
- Research assignments
- Oral presentation
- Written examinations
- Practical tasks and lab reports
- Cooperation and support of peers in learning
Each task has been linked to a reporting outcome.
