Waverley College Chess Club
The Waverley College Chess Club has a dual role within the school, it exists to give boys interested in playing the occasional game a way to find an opponent, and also to provide training for students competing in the two annual competitions in which the College participates.
In Term One each year the three teams from the College: juniors from Year 7, intermediates from Years 9 and 10, and seniors from Years 11 and 12 compete as part of the CAS competition. Matches are held on Friday afternoons after school and rather than have to travel long distances, all the matches are held at St Aloysius College at Milsons Point. All the CAS matches are played using clocks so 6pm is now the latest matches finish.
Over the years the College has had mixed fortunes in the CAS competition with some good wins in matches and hard fought losses. In the last few years we have had a number of boys from the senior team selected to represent the CAS in the annual CAS/GPS competition.
In Term Two each year the College enters a varying number of teams in the NSW Junior Chess League school's competition. Again there are three divisions, juniors, intermediates and seniors. These competitions are against other schools in the Eastern Suburbs and in recent years the number of schools competing has increased dramatically. Matches are, again, after school on Friday afternoons and may take place at Waverley or at another near by school.
The College's fortunes in the JCL competition have been fairer than for the CAS with teams winning the local divisions a couple of times in recent years. Regardless of whether the result is a victory or otherwise, the matches played as part of the JCL competition are always enjoyable and provide an opportunity to compete against boys and girls in from schools against which we don't normally compete.
Training and casual matches take place at lunchtimes spread throughout the school week and can be attended by anyone who would like a game, whether they want to play in the competitions or not (although we'd encourage them to).
