Academic Enrichment
At Waverley we are committed to building a strong academic culture which celebrates curiosity, critical thinking and nurtures globally-minded citizens. In line with the Catholic Schools NSW, High Potential and Gifted Education policy, ‘by offering tailored learning opportunities, we nurture the emotional and academic development of our high ability students, empowering them to realise their full potential in both their educational journey and future endeavours’ (CSNSW, 2024).

Years 7-10
Across Years 7-10, students in the Academic Enrichment Program learn through a differentiated curriculum designed to provide an appropriate level of challenge and extension.
Students work alongside other high-potential learners, deepen their core learning through inquiry and enrichment, and develop the metacognitive skills needed to reflect on their progress and take greater ownership of their learning. Placement is reviewed regularly, taking into account academic performance, application and engagement.
Our enrichment program features a deliberately redesigned curriculum that prioritises depth and complexity to keep high-potential learners engaged and eager to stretch their thinking.
Our approach uses evidence-based talent development (Gagne), which includes pre-assessment, curriculum compacting and purposeful extension tasks that ensure every enrichment student is known, valued and challenged to stretch their thinking.

Years 11-12
As students move into Years 11 and 12, they transition into their chosen HSC subjects while continuing to access enriching activities through a more individualised model.
Students benefit from ongoing goal coaching and study support, plus targeted opportunities such as the Ethics Olympiad, Maths Olympiad/AMC, essay and creative writing competitions, debate masterclasses, and interest-aligned projects like producing short films and documentaries.
This ensures that academic enrichment continues throughout the senior years, while supporting students to manage the increasing demands of HSC study.
From High Potential to High Performance
The foundation of Waverley’s approach is informed by Gagné’s Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent, which recognises that natural ability does not automatically lead to high achievement.
Developing potential requires the right combination of challenge, explicit teaching, deliberate practice, opportunity and support.

Waverley’s program is designed around this progression from high potential to high performance. Students are encouraged to embrace challenges, deepen their thinking and develop the cognitive and metacognitive habits that allow them to continue progressing as learning becomes more complex.

Along the way, the program fosters skills including deliberate practice, growth mindset, self-regulation, metacognition, interdisciplinary thinking, analytical depth and higher-order reasoning.
Goal Coaching
A key part of Waverley’s approach is its personalised Goal Coaching Program, developed in response to College research into academic underachievement among high-potential boys.
Data shows that as academic demands increased, some highly capable students began to lose confidence when success no longer came easily. Waverley’s framework responds by pairing students with dedicated coaches who help them set meaningful goals, monitor progress and develop stronger learning habits.
Rather than focusing only on academic extension, goal coaching builds resilience, self-awareness, confidence and the ability to respond positively to challenge.
The impact has been significant. Where high-potential students had previously shown a clear decline in academic performance across the secondary years, the cohorts involved in the program have recorded sustained GPA growth. Before introducing our goal-coaching framework, the College's longitudinal data showed a clear pattern of underachievement among high-potential students. Boys entering Year 8 with a GPA above 80 typically experienced an average decline of 27.2 percentage points by Year 11 as coursework became increasingly demanding.
Since implementing the program, however, that trend has been reversed. Rather than experiencing the expected decline, students have maintained their academic performance and recorded sustained GPA growth of 3.51% and 4.88% across the two target cohorts. In addition to this, Waverley’s median ATAR increased from approximately 75.7 in 2021 to 83.7 in 2025, representing an overall gain of around 8.0 ATAR points, or approximately 10.6%.
Waverley’s work in this area has also gained international recognition, with Deputy Principal - Teaching & Learning Lynsey Porter and Head of Academic Enrichment Helen Barrie presenting the College’s research, Reversing Underachievement in Academically Gifted Boys Through Goal Coaching, throughout 2026 and 2027, including at the International Boys’ Schools Coalition Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Enrichment Beyond the Classroom
Academic enrichment extends well beyond the classroom, providing students with opportunities to challenge themselves, pursue their interests and apply their learning in authentic contexts.
Academic Opportunities
Students are encouraged to participate in a broad range of academic competitions and enrichment activities that develop critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication. Opportunities include the da Vinci Decathlon, Ethics Olympiad, Tournament of Minds, Future Problem Solving, engineering challenges, debating and public speaking, university holiday programs, writers' festivals, and essay and reading competitions.
Immersive Learning Experiences
Our immersive learning experiences take students beyond the classroom, providing opportunities to engage with world-leading institutions, industry experts and real-world STEM environments.
Europe STEM Tour
The upcoming Europe STEM Tour gives students the opportunity to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics through visits to internationally recognised institutions across the United Kingdom, France and Switzerland. Highlights include STEM workshops at Williams F1, Bletchley Park, Silverstone and the National Space Centre, as well as visits to leading science and aerospace museums in Paris and CERN in Geneva.
Space Camp
Students have also travelled to the renowned U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, to participate in the internationally recognised Space Camp program. Through realistic space mission simulations and hands-on engineering challenges, students design and launch rockets, test heat shields, complete simulated spacewalks and develop the teamwork, resilience and problem-solving skills that underpin innovation. Beyond the STEM learning, the experience fosters independence, curiosity and confidence, inspiring students to explore future pathways in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Academic Support
Strong academic support sits alongside extension and enrichment.
Students have access to study-skills programs, SMART goal setting and mentoring, as well as targeted literacy and numeracy support with specialist teachers. Programs focus on practical skills including time management, organisation, revision, memory strategies and effective study habits.
Together, these initiatives ensure students are not only challenged academically, but also equipped with the skills, confidence and support they need to continue growing and reach their potential.
